Blindness can come from bliss- prevention comes from knowledge. Hopefully this couple’s story will provide preventive insights into what many counselors consider the worst enemy of marital intimacy-- unnatural love outside the covenant. My focus is on what I have learned from counseling couples over the past thirty years--that many personal and interpersonal issues flow and swell like a stream, and when untreated, they become a raging river that uproots many individuals and those they live with and love. I have changed the names of the characters, but have highlighted their faith, family, education and culture.Throughout the story I have underscored that the premium means to combat evil and preserve the positive self-worth of each person is a vertical relationship with Almighty God. Secondly, healthy reinforcement from a horizontal support group, whether it be ones personal or church family.Gods covenant states that a man shall leave his father and mother and cling to his wife, and that what God has joined together, let no man separate. (Mt 19) Jesus underscores that what destroys a marital bond are not a thing or place but another relationship. The following story speaks to the process of how couples become tempted, lose their way, deviate from Gods standard, think more of self than others, and eventually fall blindly in love with another. I pray the struggle of this couple will guide you into a greater understanding of what moral societies believe and how they behave. Their story like many others is still deeply buried in their broken hearts. Words cannot capture the overwhelming pain. I pray you can find someone who will help you unload it. That is where I have found the deeper truths of Scripture and life—in my bruised heart. Suffering is the best teacher. Sustainment is the virtue of good friends. Salvation is God’s mysterious and miraculous gift for anyone who asks.
